TURNER COUNTY, S.D. (KELO) - With the entire state under a red flag warning, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, everyone is being urged to take extra caution in preventing fires. "A little bit of wind, one little spark, and we've got a big problem," Emergency Management Director for Turner County, Brad Georgeson said. Georgeson says on days like today they ask everyone to be fire cautious. "We've asked area farmers to help out local fire departments and do the best that they can to try and prevent their own fires," Georgeson said. One way is by having a tractor and disc ready to go in case a fire breaks out while harvesting. "If you have a big field fire, you're not going to be able to stop it by just spraying water. You're going to need to put in some kind of firebreak. And that's what those discs allow them to do," Parker Fire Chief, Max Masters said. Anthrax confirmed in cattle at South Dakota auction It's one way farmers can also help out their local fire departments. "We have good support from our communities. And on something like this, I mean, it's a life safety deal for the farmers and for the firefighters and EMS responders that go on those calls," Masters said. With an extra level of risk, while working in dry fields, officials say it's important to check your fire gear as well. "Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher in your equipment. If there's a way you can have a water tank there on scene that helps us out," Masters said. "As well as maybe try and have a tractor disc on site while they're doing their fieldwork," Georgeson said. If you are a farmer and have a water tank or disc hooked up and are willing to help, contact your local fire department.
