HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Eating healthy is a common goal these days, but so many struggle with trying to figure out exactly what to eat, or are intimidated by the thought of cooking — not to mention the cost of all the ingredients. But one local restaurant owner is hoping to change that. Dylan Richmond's health journey started at a young age. "I remember trying to do a push up when I was 10-years-old and I couldn't do one at all,” Richmond said. His dad was also into fitness and helped him along, getting him into sports. Richmond held a few jobs at gyms, and as a fitness trainer, he even considered a career with the fire department. But he felt his calling was somewhere else. He found Clean Eatz and fell in love with the concept. "I was like, whoa, this is super convenient," Richmond said. "You can get the meals, the culture was fun, the employees were friendly, and all you had to do was microwave, reheat things and you were ready to go." Richmond quickly worked his way up, from cashier, to line cook, to management. Now he owns two locations — in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. But he doesn't hide away in an office. "I'm back there doing dishes, I'm running food, I'm cooking on the line," Richmond said. "You know, ‘cause I lead by example, I think that's huge. If you're going to build a team and a culture, you got to be the leader." Clean Eatz is pretty simple. You can go in and order a hot meal, or go to their fridge and get a pre-packaged meal to reheat later. Labels detail the calories, and which ones are high-protein or low-carb. He said they're great for people looking to get into meal prep. "And it helps them on their journey," Richmond said. "It might be weight loss, it might be weight gain, it might be, 'Hey, I'm training for a marathon,' it might be a medical reason." Healthy eating can be expensive, but these meals are meant to be affordable. If you choose the meal prep option on their website, and order up to nine meals, the price averages out to $8.65 per meal. That's about the same as one Big Mac at McDonald's. He said the brand is all about changing lives and making it easy to eat healthy. A bonus, he said, is building relationships with customers. "We get to know names, we make long-lasting friendships and we meet these people and they're not just people, they have stories and we connect on that level," Richmond said. "‘Cause we all have a story, we're all fighting for something, we all have goals." You can check out more by visiting https://cleaneatz.com/.
