KENNER, La. (WGNO) — Hurricane Francine victims in Jefferson Parish can now apply for benefits through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services projects that more than 20,000 families in Jefferson Parish will receive assistance. “It's for people who are just above the income limits for regular SNAP, or they're ineligible for some other reason, and they've had disaster-related expenses from the hurricane,” said Sammy Guillory, the assistant secretary for family support within the Department of Children and Family Services. It's a step in the right direction.” DSNAP eligibility is based upon a person's net income and available cash resources. “We subtract any disaster-related expenses that you have during that month period, and then we compare it to the federal income guidelines,” explained Guillory. Louisiana residents beware of Hurricane Francine insurance claim scams Those who are elderly and or disabled can apply in person by visiting the North Kenner or Westwego libraries.“Now that it's here, we need people to really reach out, apply, and just go through the process; it's not going to be that complicated, so they can get some relief,” said Bohanan. Hurricane-affected SNAP households in Jefferson Parish that don't already receive the maximum monthly allotment may apply for supplemental benefits to bring their households to the maximum for one month. That deadline is also Tuesday, Oct. 8.
