MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A day after Memphis Shelby County school leaders discovered they no longer had the federal funds for a Fall Break Learning Academy, local donors have come together to make it happen this year. The week-long fall break starts on Monday. School Board Member Sable Otey says so many parents and students depend on the program when school is not in session. "Sometimes, the meals that we provide them are the only ones they get, so right away, I called our community partners. YMCA, the TVA, Carter Malone Group, Cigna. I called a few people," said Otey. "They got on there quickly to make this happen. I appreciate them and their urgency to make sure we could make this happen for our children." Otey said that because of the donations, the YMCA was able to hire more staff and expand the camps already being offered to kids during the fall break. Cleo Griffin, the Vice President of Workplace Development for the YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South, said they anticipate serving around 800 kids over the break, and thanks to the donor contributions, their camps will be free to around 500. "We are excited and humbled that someone has stepped up to provide this much support for families," said Griffin. Whitehaven STEM Center on track to open, principal says The camps will be held at different YMCA locations, churches, and schools and will run from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. "You are talking arts and crafts, enrichment programs. A variety of activities over the course of the week that will certainly help them get prepared to come back to school the following Monday in the right mindset," Griffin said. Otey said the district will notify parents so they can sign their kids up for the academy. She said the school board is working hard to secure funding for future camps during school breaks. "I do apologize on behalf of our district at the late time, but our goal is to make sure we have camps in place during those times -- fall camps, summer camps. We want to make sure we have those in place for parents and teachers because teachers were looking forward to it as well," Otey said. The YMCA said the list of locations for its fall camps will be posted online. For more information, click here.
