HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A spectacular partial solar eclipse captivated observers across the Pacific, including Hawaii, shortly after sunrise on Thursday.

Nick Bradley of Stargazers of Hawaii noted, “We got a partial eclipse happening in Hawaii. The moon is covering about 47 percent of the sun. This will be the last solar eclipse for Hawaii until 2031, so we’re excited to see that.”

The event also produced a Ring of Fire effect in the skies over parts of South America.

This phenomenon, known as an annular eclipse, occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun at or near its farthest point from Earth, preventing it from completely blocking the sun, as happens during a total solar eclipse.
