CORNELIUS, N.C. — The full extent of the damage from Hurricane Helene is still unknown. What is known right now is that many North Carolinians need help now. The Town of Cornelius is sending its own aid through a donation drive. WCCB Charlotte’s Zane Cina was there as people dropped off what they could to help victims of the storm. Assistant Town Manager Tyler Beardsley says donations have been coming in since the rain stopped last week. Cornelius Police Department was the first to accept supplies from donors, but a huge influx of donations led to the Town getting involved. Now donations are being gathered outside of Town Hall through the end of the week. Beardsley says many supplies are needed to help those who saw the worst of Helene. “Need more of cleaning supplies. Anything baby related. Diapers, baby food, sippy cups, formula, anything like that…nonperishable foods,” Beardsley said. The Town has made eight trips to western North Carolina areas that were hit the worst. Those areas include Black Mountain, Burnsville, Hot Springs, Newland, Sparta, Swananoa, West Jefferson, Wilkes County, and Yancey County. Beardsley says donations are heading to Avery County next. Cornelius will accept donations through Friday. All donations can be dropped off at Cornelius Town Hall at 21445 Catawba Ave between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A full list of needed items can be found at www.cornelius.org.
