WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- There's heightened tension around the world and in the DMV as Jewish people are preparing to celebrate the Jewish New Year called Rosh Hashanah. Ahead of the holiday, some people have concerns about safety as thousands flock to local synagogues for services over the next two days. Judge rules to allow Palestinian student group to host vigil on Oct. 7 at the University of Maryland Days after an Iranian missile attack on Israel, members of the Jewish community in D.C. are feeling troubled. "It's pretty upsetting to see what happened. I feel like we're all connected to Israel as a Jewish community. Even if we're in here in the United States," Ben Wacks said. And as many prepare to celebrate the Jewish New Year, security is top of mind. "I feel safe coming here. They have a lot of security guards. And we'll have even more when we're actually, thousands of us are here for services," a member of Adas Israel said. Palestinian student group sues UMD for not allowing vigil on October 7 Ron Halber, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, said even with the latest attack, security in the area remains largely the same over the last year since the Oct. 7 attack. "Unfortunately every high holiday season, we take security precautions to make sure that our institutions will be safe places to greet family and pray together and welcome the new year," Halber said. He said the federal government makes millions of dollars available for physical security needs. "But we know from research, the single greatest to turn to an act of violence or somebody committing, a hate crime is a police officer," Halber said. "The more money that we can get into the nonprofit, community, to provide off-duty police, the better," Halber said. D.C. police said there are no known threats but urge the community to remain vigilant and if you see something to say something.
