SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Oakland is home to the best private high school in California, according to Niche's 2025 list. Niche recently released its annual "Best High Schools in California" rankings, and five of the top 10 private schools are right here in the Bay Area. The College Preparatory School in Oakland topped the list at No. 1, followed by Stanford Online High School at No. 2. Both schools have 100 percent graduation rates and earned "A+" from Niche. One parent whose son is a College Preparatory School student wrote, "Every one of his teachers has been engaged. Classes are challenging and creative. Student body is filled with highly intelligent kids who all strive to attend top tier colleges, but maintain a highly-supportive atmosphere where kids celebrate others successes. Admission counselors look for kids who are both smart and kind." The Nueva School in Hillsborough made it into the No. 4 spot for private schools, followed by The Quarry Lane School in Dublin (No. 9), and Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough (No. 10). Three public high schools in the Bay Area made the top 10 for 2025: Henry M. Gunn High School in Palo Alto ranked No. 4, Palo Alto High School ranked No. 9, and Lowell High School in San Francisco ranked No. 10. A Henry M. Gunn parent wrote that the school is "A breath of fresh air compared to the elite entitled Bay Area private schools. At Gunn, there are amazing academics and various classes that cater to everyone's needs. Great athletic program (esp swimming and water polo) as well as student-led clubs."
