OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- The African American Sports and Entertainment Group (AASEG) is clarifying what they say is inaccurate information about their deal to purchase the City of Oakland’s 50 percent share of the Oakland Coliseum. Three city councilmembers came forward earlier this week, saying none of AASEG's money had been received and they were informed budget cuts were already underway as a result. Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao’s opponents seized on this information, causing the mayor’s office to refute the claims, saying no contingency budget has been triggered and the deal is on track. Fleet Week SF 2024 schedule, events what you need to know In an interview with KRON4 News, AASEG said its initial $5 million payment was paid on Sept. 3. Since that time, AASEG has been working with the city administrator's officer to amend the purchase and sale agreement, to better protect AASEG’s investment. Under a tentative agreement reached Sept. 30, a $10 million payment which was originally due on Sept. 23, will be paid on Oct. 7. AASEG also had payments scheduled in November and January, and then a final payment in March of 2026, totaling the remaining $90 million. Under the new tentative agreement, AASEG will pay that lump sum of $90 million much earlier -- in May of next year -- and add an additional $5 million to the purchase price. It is unclear if the city council was not informed about the ongoing negotiations between AASEG and the city administrators and if not, why not. Asked about being thrust into the middle of a political situation, AASEG’s Ray Bobbitt said: “We're here to do something historic for our community, and certainly the politics can be very distracting. It really is disheartening to some degree. But the good news is the community is overwhelmingly supportive and positive. So, we just feel like these kind of scenarios can hopefully be an opportunity for everybody to work together more closely. Because this could have, obviously probably been avoided if we would have, if there would have just been a maybe one meeting that got canceled or got missed. And, you know, you know, maybe it was that simple. Maybe it was something that we could have just avoided, but it's been a distraction from the last 24 hours, certainly, but not a deterrent and we're excited about this transaction.”
