Sonny Vereen Park has closed for four weeks as the Environmental Protection Agency addresses a lead contamination problem. The project near Dickinson St. includes the installation of clean soil, grass, and mulch following an EPA discovery of elevated levels of surface soils at Sonny Vereen and Breunig Ave. parks. On Thursday, Sept. 26, the EPA completed remediation at Breunig where some parts of the park will remain fenced off to allow grass growth. Parents were cautioned about giving children access to the high-level lead areas. An outdoor area of Grant Intermediate School received remediation during the summer of 2024. The EPA is proposing to add the Historic Potteries site in Trenton, New Jersey to the National Priorities List, or NPL, based on the results of an extensive investigation that began in 2018. This means that the site is eligible for federal funding to pay for extensive, long-term cleanup actions under the EPA’s Superfund program. The EPA is also testing soil at residential properties in East Trenton for free. If you would like the EPA to test the soil at your property, please call Jonathan Byk at (347) 899-6210.
