PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Housing said it completed the purchase of the former Charlesgate Nursing Home in Providence for  $6.85 million. RIDOH said that the purchase “allows the state to sustain crucial emergency shelter in a state-owned asset” and will reduce long-term shelter costs. The purchase was paid for using the Homelessness Infrastructure appropriation on the governor’s 2024 budget. “Our administration is committed to growing housing capacity in Rhode Island, from emergency shelters to affordable and workforce housing,” Gov. Dan McKee said. Currently, the building is leased by local homeless service provider, Amos House and the YWCA, as a temporary shelter for homeless families and veterans.
