SCITUATE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Scituate home was heavily damaged in a fire Wednesday afternoon, and 12 News has learned the family who lives there was already fighting a battle. Firefighters from several area departments responded to Silk Lane to help put out the flames. A 22-year-old who lives at the home told 12 News her father is a Cranston firefighter who's on leave to take care of her mother, who has ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Prior to the fire, a GoFundMe page had already raised more than $20,000 to help Rae-Anne Laprade and her family. Fire officials on scene said Laprade was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The bomb squad was called in after an inert grenade and military-style weapons and ammunition were found in the home, according to the state fire marshal's office. Those items, collected by the father, were removed for safety reasons. The fire marshal's office said the fire was accidental, having been caused by a malfunctioning gas dryer.
