PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Security at local synagogues will be increased during the High Holidays that start Wednesday night. "Law enforcement has to be there, to make sure that our community feels safe," Adam Greenman, CEO of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, told 12 News. Ensuring safety is back on the minds of community leaders following Iran's missile strike against Israel Tuesday. BACKGROUND: Iran fires at least 180 missiles into Israel as regionwide conflict grows "I think that there's a heightened sense of awareness, both among congregants and among law enforcement," Greenman said. "So you may see, in addition to the security that's on site, additional police officers patrolling and in their cars around facilities." U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, who chairs the chamber's Armed Services Committee, said religious sites should be able to "be well-protected" if they feel threatened. The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island has an event on Oct. 7 that will commemorate the terror attack happened on that day last year. During the event, those who were affected by the attack will also lead prayers and deliver speeches.
