A federal grant from the Environmental Protection Agency is going to a nationwide solar initiative for disaster recovery housing. The $52.4 million grant will be focused on homes in Kentucky’s eastern and western regions, along with customers of the state’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). A release says Kentucky expects to see 41 apprenticeship scholarships and more than 500 training scholarships as part of the grant. The program is expected to take five years, if the state’s plans are approved by the EPA. Another $5 million dollars from the EPA is going to clean up and develop the CSX Ravenna Rail Yard in Estill County. The space will be transformed into a community greenspace including a music pavilion, campground and jogging trails.
