BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Police have arrested a man accused of threatening to kill a woman while sexually assaulting her in Bloomington last week. Police launched an investigation into Rodrigo Perez Curiel after a woman filed a report with the Bloomington Police Department on Sept. 29 shortly before 6 a.m. The woman told police that an unknown man had sexually assaulted her after she was reportedly attacked near the roundabout on W. 17th Street. The woman informed police that Curiel was allegedly armed with a box cutter and repeatedly told her that he was going to kill her during the incident. As the suspect made these unwanted advances, the woman told police that she tried calling 911 multiple times but was unable to because Curiel allegedly took her cell phone. Officers said the victim was observed wearing clothing that was covered in mud and grass and bruises were visible on her arms and she had a cut on her neck, according to BPD. BPD said officers launched an investigation and returned to the location where the assault allegedly occurred. Police reportedly found the victim's phone and multiple pieces of evidence while on the scene. Detectives proceeded to review surveillance camera footage which showed a vehicle they believed Curiel was operating before and after the assault. Investigators also utilized Flock license plate readers to capture images of the suspect vehicle, allowing them to determine the license plate number. BPD went on to add that detectives determined that the registered owner of the vehicle matched the description of the suspect provided by the victim. On Oct. 1, detectives found the suspect vehicle in the 1200 block of N. Maple Street where they began investigating. A man, later identified by police to be Curiel, was observed entering the vehicle around 1:19 p.m. BPD said officers conducted a traffic stop in the 1300 block of W. Third Street. The driver was taken into custody without incident and interviewed by investigators about his alleged involvement in the assault. His vehicle was also impounded by police as part of their investigation. He was still handcuffed and quickly detained again by officers in the 400 block of N. Morton Street near Bloomington City Hall. Curiel was transported to the Monroe County Jail where he faces the following felony charges: Rape (while armed with a deadly weapon/threatening the use of deadly force), level 1 felony Escape, level 5 felony Resisting Law Enforcement, Class A misdemeanor
