INDIANAPOLIS - With construction season coming to an end, the Indiana Department of Transportation is working to get as much done on I-465 as possible.INDOT said it's been a busy yet efficient summer for them. Ramp metering and new variable speed limit signs went up on the southeast side, but there are also several ongoing projects around I-465. Many drivers said they're using back roads to avoid it.“When I get my GPS, it gives me good directions to bypass all the main construction roads," said one driver, Jamaal White. On the south side, INDOT is working on completing the I-69 Finish Line. On the northeast side, they're working on their Clear Path project. Both areas of I-465 have road shifts because INDOT is adding extra lanes. "We are seeing congestion in this area and we're also seeing some heat maps. That's showing that there is a lot of standstill traffic,”  said Kyleigh Cramer, public relations director for INDOT.  We're seeing more folks merging in this area and just trying to make it an overall safe and efficient area that folks can drive.” Along with new projects, they also need to take care of the existing roadways. Two projects are areas on the west side between I-74 and I-70 and on the east side near the airport. Both are under maintenance and INDOT said they're wrapping up soon.“That concrete restoration project on the east and west side of 465 in Marion County, those are expanding the lifeline of those roads. It's ensuring that those roads are being maintained,” said Cramer. An ongoing maintenance project from April 2023 is on the northwest side. The ramp heading onto 465 from Michigan Road closed on Oct. 1, so crews could pour the last section of the bridge deck over 96th street, according to INDOT.INDOT said the on-ramp should be back open by Monday and all of the bridge work in that area will be complete by the end of the year. Drivers said while the road work can be a pain at times, some are appreciative of the progress this construction season.“They're working on these potholes. They're working on these conditions to make it so us drivers to go out here and be able to get to our destination in a smooth, safe condition way,” said White.  INDOT reminds drivers to slow down around construction zones while they're still at work for a bit longer.“As long as the weather affords us to be out there, we're going to be out there because that will allow us to make up for time that we haven't been able to get out there due to weather this year,” said Cramer.
