FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — 2009 was a turbulent time for America. Already investing nearly a decade into Afghanistan, boots were still on the ground and Osama Bin Laden was still at large. All of it led protestors to the Allen County Courthouse lawn. "[Bin Laden] could be in Fort Wayne, we really don't know," said one anti-war protestor. "Support our troops, bring 'em home alive," read the sign of another protestor. WANE 15 covered the protest 15 years ago, even recording an argument between a protestor and someone driving by on Clinton Street. "They're not Americans," said an anti-war protestor. "So you want them (presumably terrorists) to just keep doing it?" replied the driver. WANE 15 interviewed the late congressman Mark Souder, who was planning on committing more resources to the war. "Clearly we can't just cut and run or the terrorists will take it over again, reorganize, develop new techniques and attack us," Souder told WANE 15. The conflict ended with the U.S. pulling troops in 2021. The protest shows that the Allen County Courthouse has been and continues to be a venue for free speech with several protests taking place there already in 2024.
