(COLORADO) — A new analysis reports Colorado has one of the highest numbers of reports and rates of human trafficking across the U.S. According to an analysis by the Common Sense Institute (CSI), Colorado's crime surge in the early 2020s not only included property and violent crimes but a human trafficking surge as well. Human trafficking cases come in two forms, according to the CSI -- victims are coerced into labor or into commercial sex acts — which represents the majority of Colorado's human trafficking. According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), labor trafficking can be described as modern-day slavery while sex trafficking is described as commercial sex. In 2023, Colorado ranked #10 in the highest number of human trafficking reports, with 84 in total. Since 2014, numbers have been on the rise. In the U.S. overall, reported numbers reached a 15-year peak in 2023 with 3,117--more than twice the number reported in 2019. Colorado also has the nation's 10th highest rate of human trafficking reports per 100,000 at 1.44. Concentrations of human trafficking took place all over the state, but some counties were more heavily concentrated than others. From 2008 to 2024, Adams County (156), El Paso County (124), and Denver County (106) had the highest number of human trafficking offenses. In 2023 alone, Adams County (26), Denver County (18), and Boulder County (15) had the highest number of human trafficking victims. The analysis said there were 99 victims statewide in 2023. Human Trafficking information can be submitted to the CBI online at cbi.colorado.gov. The CBI has a dedicated team that assists local law enforcement in identifying, investigating, and abolishing human trafficking.
