(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) said officers have arrested a suspect in a shooting and crash on Monday, Oct. 1. According to CSPD, on Aug. 26 at around 11:45 p.m. officers were called to the 4200 block of North Chestnut Street near Garden of the Gods Road and I-25 about a single-vehicle crash. When police arrived they found a man dead in the vehicle with at least one gunshot wound. The man was later identified as 24-year-old Vidal Vigil by the El Paso County Coroner's Office on Aug. 27. CSPD said while the coroner's office will determine the cause and manner of death, Vigil's death is being investigated as a homicide. During CSPD's investigation, they identified 35-year-old Michael Darnell Gilliam as the suspect. On Oct. 1 CSPD arrested Gilliam on charges of murder in the first degree. CSPD said the case remains an active investigation and anyone with information or who was a witness is asked to contact CSPD at (719) 444-7000 Vigil's death is the 30 homicide in Colorado Springs, at this time in 2023 there were 21 homicides.
