MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – From World War II to Vietnam, the USS Yorktown now sits in Charleston Harbor preserving the history of our nation’s bravest. “I was in local law enforcement, and I actually investigated homicides. So, you’re dealing with dead folks,” said Bruce Orr who said he's fascinated with ghost tales and legends and works as a tour guide for Bulldog Tours. “Nowadays I’m telling stories about older, more further back dead folks, so you know I’ve been making my living for a long time off of dead people,” shared Orr. “These are a lot less fresh than the previous career. I like it a lot better, and I get to talk to folks like you without yellow tape between us." Aboard the USS Yorktown, Orr shared the stories of restless servicemen rumored to be roaming the ship. “There was one young lady who was cleaning this room. She tidies up, she cleans off all the tables, gets rid of all the trash and everything. She tucks all these chairs underneath the table nice and quietly. She steps back out to get some more cleaning supplies. As soon as she turns around and steps in the doorway, all the chairs were in a disarray. They came completely out from underneath the table, turned in all sorts of directions, but no sound. She did not hear any of them move, so that was her story about being haunted in this location,” said Orr. Holy City Halloween to support hurricane relief efforts Upstairs, Orr shared another story he witnessed during a paranormal investigation after a young man who he thought was security hurried towards the end of the ship. Orr said, “I’m chasing him. I get about 20 feet. He stops here, turns left towards the stairs, and there’s no longer anything here.” Never able to recreate the scene to this day, he is left wondering if it was a living person, and where that person went so quickly. “I’ve had a lot of things happen in my life, but I’ve never had a person vaporize at 20 feet,” said Orr. VIDEO EXTRA: USS Yorktown employee, Rose Putz, recalls her ghostly experiences on the historic ship. Smuggled aboard the Yorktown from the docks of Pearl Harbor, Scrappy the canine sailor was a crew favorite. “Now Scrappy stayed on board the ship for quite a while. He stayed for a year. After he retired, he went to live happily ever after with the family, but when passed away, he comes back, and he haunts the ship. He’s often heard throughout the ship, running around, barking wherever the pilots will be. You can hear Scrappy,” said Orr. Scrappy, along with others, is believed to be still reporting on deck. “If there is such a thing as a ghost on the Yorktown it’s an American hero, it’s a serviceman, you can’t have a greater love for your country to come back from the dead to continue to fight for, so that is tremendous love for your country,” explained Orr.
