The Boise City Council held a meeting Tuesday night discussing traffic lights. All council members voted to install red light cameras around the city, so those who run red lights are easier to catch and ticket. Boise mayor Lauren McLean said safety is a huge priority, so this is an important first step to realizing a goal we have relating to safety in our city. CBS2 reports Boise will be the first city in Idaho to have a red light camera program. The City Council added that the cameras would help police determine who is responsible if a crash happened in Boise. The next steps for the project include acquiring a license agreement with the Ada County Highway District. The time frame, length, number of cameras, which intersections the cameras will go on and vendor identification also need to be determined. This technology is divisive across the U.S. Some states, like neighboring Montana, have banned red light cameras altogether.
