BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The nursing program at Southern University is making history with the Black male nurses' population. According to the program's dean, Sandra Brown, there are currently 33 Black male students enrolled in the program, which makes it the most Black male students enrolled at one time in the program's history. On the nursing program's social media page, some of the Black male students shared their reasons for going into nursing. The video has gotten over 35,000 views and 1,200 likes. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, of the 6.7% of nurses who are Black, only 0.67% are Black men. The nursing program is one of the largest producers of Black nurses in the nation and is a leader in preparing students to create diverse workforces, the university website states.
