BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Two men convicted of murder in the shooting death of a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation counselor who was charging his electric vehicle were sentenced Wednesday to life terms in prison at an emotional hearing in which family of the counselor lambasted the defendants. Richard Alcala, brother of victim Benny Alcala, called Robert Roberts and Sebastian Parra cowards who have done nothing positive with their lives, and whom no one will miss. His brother, in contrast, was a hard worker who had earned a life filled with love and happiness, Richard Alcala said. The defendants snatched that away. Robert Roberts, file image "I ask you, judge, that you show Roberts and Parra the same mercy that they showed to my brother," Richard Alcala said. He said they deserve to "rot in cells for the rest of their lives." Roberts, 31, and Parra, 24, sat quietly as Richard Alcala and others spoke of their loss and asked the court for the maximum punishment. Judge Judith K. Dulcich sentenced Roberts to life without the possibility of parole, plus 25 years to life, plus five years. She sentenced Parra to 25 years to life. During victim impact statements, Anthony Alcala, Benny Alcala's eldest son, spoke of his father's generosity, both to his family and the community at large. He said his parents were big on education. His father was overjoyed when he got accepted to multiple colleges. Sebastian Parra, file image When his father was killed, Anthony Alcala said through tears, it "crushed" him -- but he knew he had to power through and keep going to school because it's what his father would have wanted. As Anthony Alcala spoke, apologizing to the court at times as he paused to compose himself, his brother walked up. His brother placed an arm around his shoulders. Benny Alcala was killed near the charging station by the Target on Stockdale Highway the evening of Aug. 24, 2022. At trial, prosecutor John Allen said Benny Alcala was killed as Roberts and Parra attempted to rob him. He said Roberts was the shooter, and Parra gave him the gun. Benny Alcala was shot in the back while running away. Deputy Public Defender Gordon Lake represents Roberts. Defense lawyer Timothy Hennessy represents Parra. Each argued at trial that the other’s client was responsible for Alcala’s death. 17 News' Robert Price will have more on this story.
