CHARLESTON, S.C. — Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau doesn’t look at his team’s new bench as a weakness. Instead, after losing Isaiah Hartenstein in free agency, signing veteran second-unit help in Cameron Payne and Landry Shamet, and trading Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Karl-Anthony Towns, Thibodeau views depth as a strong suit. “I’m not [concerned about depth]. I actually like our bench a lot,” he said at the McAlister Field House at The Citadel on Day 2 of Knicks training camp on Wednesday. “I think when you look at the things that our guys have done — and I’m still not sure exactly who it might be — but Landry’s been on a team that won at a high level, Cam’s been on a team that won at a high level.” Thibodeau also mentioned two players who are returning for another season in New York: Miles McBride, who goes by the nickname “Deuce,” and Precious Achiuwa, who re-signed in New York on a one-year $6 million deal after Hartenstein’s departure. “Deuce has provided a lot for us over that time,” he continued. “Precious has been in a lot of big games for us. And then one of the starters is gonna be with [the second unit]. So I think our bench is gonna be a huge asset for us.” The Knicks coach is a fan of the versatility his new-look lineup provides on the floor. He is also excited to have a full training camp to fold in OG Anunoby, who was acquired in a mid-season trade with the Toronto Raptors last season. “Each year is different, and you have to come together and get everyone on the same page. I think the fact that you have had guys who have played previously with each other, they know each other,” said Thibodeau, noting Shamet and Payne played with Mikal Bridges on the Phoenix Suns in 2022. “So Mikal, you look at Landry and Cam. They’re familiar with each other. And I think the guys that were here last year, they understand that as well. It’s great to have OG here in training camp, so we can build off of all the things that he does well for us. Josh was in a bunch of different roles for us, and that’s good, as well as Deuce. Deuce has played on the ball, off the ball, with the starters, off the bench. I think that versatility is a huge plus for us.” LOSS PREVENTION The Knicks were ravaged by injury last season. Thibodeau said he’s not letting last year’s misfortune influence his approach this time around. “No,” he said on Wednesday. “Injuries are part of — every team has injuries, so you just deal with them. That’s part of pro sports. So some years you don’t have any injuries, other years you do. So whatever your reality is.” Josh Hart, who played in all but one game last season, scoffed at the idea of changing his play style, or his routine, to avoid getting hurt. “That’s for the media to sit there and cry about. I never go into a game and think I’ve gotta pace myself or think I’ve gotta not play as hard as I’m supposed to,” he said on Wednesday. “Every game I play, I sit there and pray to my lord and savior for protection, and I go out there and play this game as hard as I can, and if god-willing I’m able to play all the time, I am, if not, I’m gonna continue praying and stay in my faith and let that encourage me. But I’m not worried about burning out or otherworldly advice to take a day off.” BIG KAT TIME The Towns trade is official. The Knicks’ new All-Star big man can officially practice with his new team. He is expected to talk to reporters on Thursday. Hart said it will take time to get Towns up to speed. “I think it takes a little bit of time. Me, I haven’t played with that many shooting bigs in my career, so I’m looking forward to someone who can isolate on the post and make good decisions, put the ball in the basket,” he said. “I told him whenever I get a rebound and run, just crash to the three-point. I’m sure he’ll get some open threes that way. “But it’s gonna take some time just to get the feeling down. JB [Jalen Brunson], Mikal, myself playing together. OG’s played with JB and myself for a handful of games, but it’s gonna take a little bit and that’s what training camp and preseason is for so we can hit the ground running on the 22nd.” Hart doesn’t think Towns will be too rusty three days into camp. “No. I think he can still put the ball in the basket,” he said. “So I think he’ll be alright.”
