Teen dead, 2 hospitalized after car hits pole in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- A 17-year-old girl is dead, and two other teens are in critical condition after a crash in Sandy Spring on Wednesday morning.
According to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), shortly before 8 a.m., responders were dispatched to the area of Norwood Road and Nesbitt Farm Lane for a serious crash.

An investigation revealed that a car collided with a wooden light pole. A 17-year-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and died at the scene, according to police.

Responders took two occupants, a 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, to a local hospital in critical condition.
As of Wednesday morning, the intersection of Norwood Road and Nesbitt Farm Lane is closed due to the crash.
In response to the crash, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) sent the following statement to DC News Now:
MCPS has confirmed that three Sherwood High School students were involved in the fatal car accident the morning of October 2, 2024 in the area of Norwood Road and Nesbitt Farm Lane in Sandy Spring, Maryland. One of the students was declared deceased.
We are saddened by the news and are providing support to students, staff and families affected by this tragic event."

Police will release the name of the 17-year-old girl who died after the next of kin is notified.
