CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - As we enter the month of October, temperatures will begin to cool down with overnight temperatures possibly getting below freezing.  Where can you pick your own pumpkins in western Massachusetts? October is known for its beautiful fall colors and cool temperatures. Many areas across the country have seen their first frost such as the Rocky Mountains, Great Lakes region, and even some high terrain in northern New England.  For western Massachusetts, the average first frost is typically between October 1st and 15th.  While the average timeframe for frost right now, there aren't any significant signs of frost within the next 7 days. The average first frost continues to get later as the fall season warms. 7 Day Forecast According to Climate Central, the average number of fall days with above average temperatures between 1970 to 2023 has risen by 13 days in Springfield with now having around 45 days in the season with above average temperatures. Climotologists expect this number will continue to climb with the average first frost being pushed back more and more. October is also the first month with an average snowfall of 0.2 inches in western Massachusetts.
