RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The fourth annual Food 4 Thought Poetry Slam is returning to the Virginia Museum of History and Culture on Saturday, Oct. 5. Ahead of the event, 8News got an inside look at what attendees can expect to enjoy. In the morning on Wednesday, Oct. 2, StormTracker 8 Meteorologist Matt DiNado and Anchor Delaney Hall spoke with Douglas Powell, artistically known as Roscoe Burnems, host and co-creator of the poetry slam. Powell is also a Tedx youth speaker and Inaugural Poet Laureate of Richmond. For those who will be attending their first-ever poetry competition this year, Powell explained the form of the craft as well as how it is performed. "A poetry slam is a spoken word competition. Poets get on stage, they pour out their heart and their soul, and then we have these five judges, which are -- in normal poetry slams, are random people out of the audience who don't know the poets, but this time, we have some special guests -- they give a score," Powell explained. Powell added that the competition is intense with passionate narratives. Powell explained that the art of slam poetry is a long tradition that probably began in the mid-1980s in Chicago and has branched out since then. "It's this blossoming performance art that has reached across the country," Powell said. Powell said that the Food 4 Thought Poetry Slam is the biggest poetry competition in Virginia. Powell then gave viewers a sneak peak as to what the form looks like through a few verses of an original slam poem. The event will span from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, located at 428 North Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond. Check-in and food reception will span before the event, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
