GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- A man who faces charges in the wake of his father's alleged attempt on former President Donald Trump's life appeared in court earlier this week. Oran Routh, 35, was in federal court on Tuesday for a detention hearing after he was arrested near the end of September. The arrest came when authorities searched his home "in connection with an investigation unrelated to child exploitation" and reportedly found the child sex abuse material. Investigators found "hundreds" of files, according to court documents, along with messaging apps that the investigating agent identified as one often used by people exchanging child sex abuse material. "These files include video from a known child pornography series created outside of the state of North Carolina," the complaint filed with the court states, describing it as a video showing an adult with children between the ages of 8-10. Video shows Oran Routh, son of Trump assassination suspect, being arrested by FBI agents on child sexual abuse image charges He is facing two charges: possessing child pornography and receiving child pornography. Oran Routh appeared in court on Tuesday, where a judge released him to the custody of his mother before his trial. He entered a plea of not guilty to both counts. Federal court records indicate his trial will begin in December. Background The "investigation unrelated to child exploitation" that authorities referenced upon his arrest was the arrest of Oran Routh's father, Ryan, after he was allegedly seen at Trump's golf course with a gun while the former president was golfing on Sunday, Sept. 15. Ryan Routh was arrested about forty five minutes after Secret Service opened fire on him, miles away from the golf course where a backpack, the gun he was allegedly using and a GoPro camera were found. He was initially charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm with a destroyed serial number. Following that, he was indicted by a grand jury for additional charges, including attempted assassination. He remains in custody. Having lived most of his life in Greensboro, Ryan Routh was known to the community and to law enforcement in the area prior to moving to Hawaii with his younger son, not Oran Routh, around 2018. A friend of Ryan Routh's was in possession of a box that contained a note that detailed his desire to kill Trump, investigators say. "Dear world, this was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I am so sorry I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster," the alleged letter reads. A woman who knew him during the time he spent in Ukraine described him as a "ticking time bomb" to authorities long before the assassination attempt, telling the Associated Press, "Ryan was the kind of guy who would blow up a building on Tuesday, just because he felt like it."
