AUSTIN (KXAN) — Fourth down and 31 yards to go is not traditionally a down and distance where a team leaves their offense on the field. However, the Alabama Crimson Tide needed a miracle. Down 24-20 to their most despised rival in Auburn, and on the road with under two minutes to go, the odds were stacked egregiously against them. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe dropped back and chucked a spiral deep to the corner of the end zone toward wide receiver Isaiah Bond. It’s time for the Longhorns to refresh during bye week with Red River Rivalry on the horizon What followed after the ball left Milroe's hand has become a legend. On a play dubbed as "Gravedigger," Bond corralled the ball and got two feet down for a game-winning touchdown that stunned the Auburn Tigers' faithful. The world, including the Texas Longhorns, was watching. "He makes plays in critical moments," said Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian about Bond before referencing the play. "I think just our quarterbacks seeing that on TV automatically gave him a little bit of a head start. Like this guy can make a play when you got to have it." Bond and his big-play ability have fit in seamlessly with the Longhorns. Despite win in SEC opener, Texas falls to No. 2 in latest AP Top 25 He caught five passes for 74 yards in the 35-13 win over Mississippi State, including a 27-yard catch in the first quarter. Bond also had a 56-yard grab against Louisiana-Monroe and he leads the team with 20 catches for 346 yards through five games. When asked if this kind of start was how he envisioned it would be at Texas, he gave an honest answer. "Most definitely," he said. "Being that explosive guy. Number one guy off the edge. A guy that you have to game plan for." Sarkisian said Bond is one of those players who always has a chance to take it the distance, no matter the route. Bond followed Sarkisian's path of moving from Tuscaloosa to Austin. While Sarkisian didn't coach the star wideout at Alabama, the similarities in style may have helped Bond's move. "Systematically, I think [Alabama] kept a lot of some of the things that we did. So when he came here, the transition for him to integrate himself into the offense and feel comfortable in the offense was probably a little easier for him than maybe a Matthew Golden or Silas Bolden coming from other places," Sarkisian said. While things are going great for Bond at the moment, he thinks they can get even better. "I definitely can improve my game," said Bond. "This is a little glimpse of what I'm showing. Anyone I feel like there is room for improvement. Nobody is perfect so I feel like I definitely have improvement to go."
