Since retiring five months ago, I have made some new friends. They differ from my older friends in various ways. Some have four legs, some have fleece, some boast feathers and all have tails. Yet they all have one common trait: all were given a second chance at life and all reside at Last Chance Ranch, a wonderful rescue organization in Richland Township, Bucks County. Last Chance Ranch (LCR) just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Twenty-five years of rescuing, rehabilitating, rehoming and loving over 1,000 animals over the years, many of whom have only ever known neglect and abuse. Some were surrendered for a variety of reasons. Death of their current owners, relocation to another state or even country, where they could not take their furry family member, or a current owner who could no longer care for them, even hoarding situations are just a few reasons why some animals end up at LCR. I am grateful for this organization, and all the other fine rescues that exist, for the work they do. The exceptional care the staff and volunteers offer is second to none. In my short time volunteering at LCR, I have met peacocks, alpacas, horses, sheep, goats, roosters, turkeys, donkeys, pigs, mini-ponies, cows, dogs… just to name a few! Last week, I met two newly retired police horses! Each animal has a distinct personality and each shows gratitude in its own way. Each week when I show up for my shift, the “clientele” is always slightly different! The best news is when an animal has been adopted — that always makes me happy. LCR is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that relies on donations and fundraising events as well as income from their local thrift store. The good that they do for these wonderful animals is matched only by the educational outreach for the community that they perform. Some animals are ambassadors for their breeds, some are therapy animals at local nursing homes, schools and hospitals. Several horses are housed at Graterford Prison and participate in a program where they work with inmates. This unique experience allows not only the horse to help rehabilitate the inmate, but also the inmate to help rehabilitate the horse. It is a win-win situation. In addition to all that, LCR offers Rescue Camps, horseback riding lessons, internships for colleges, volunteering possibilities and mentoring programs. I believe I have found a true passion working with these animals and especially the horses. Each week is a new experience, a stronger bond and a whole lot of love. I am truly grateful for this new phase in my life. Thanks, LCR!
