RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina is among the worst states for road fatalities involving speeding, a new study has found. The study from MarketWatch Guides ranks North Carolina as the fourth-worst state in the nation for fatal crashes involving speeding. The study is based on the number of licensed drivers, fatal crashes involving speeding, and fatal crashes per 100,000 licensed drivers. Wyoming ranks as the worst state for fatal crashes involving speeding, according to the study, with 24 fatal crashes per 100,000 licensed drivers (220,842 licensed drivers, 53 fatal crashes). New Mexico is the second worst at 21.1 fatal crashes per 100,000 licensed drivers (744,389 licensed drivers, 157 fatal crashes) and South Carolina is the third worst at 19.3 fatal crashes per 100,000 licensed drivers (1.95 million licensed drivers, 375 fatal crashes). The study ranks Florida as having the fewest fatal crashes involving speeding, with 4.2 fatal crashes involving speeding per 100,000 licensed drivers.
