ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After months of delays, one of the most anticipated parks and rec attractions is officially open to the public. As part of the Juan Tabo Hills Park project, the city has been working on getting two 100-foot embankment slides built into the landscape. Story continues below News: ABQ Ride installs new tech showing ridership is up 25% since last July Trending: Andean bear settles into new habitat at the ABQ BioPark Update: New Sunport food vendor area delayed due to construction setbacks The first embankment slide is complete, and it's designed for ages 5 to 12, and it's done so for the children's safety. “This slide delivers a very fun experience for young kids, but it is not designed to accelerate them to speeds that are not safe,” said Director Dave Simon, City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department. The slides were supposed to be completed last year but safety elements needed re-enforcement and vandals hit the construction site. “So we had to take our time and also learn as we went to make some adjustments in the slide to get it to this point where we are excited that it is now formally open," said Simon. As for the second slide, it still has some work to be done. “We're working with the manufacturers to tighten up and strengthen some of the connection points on the pieces of the slide. And that's the critical thing," said Simon. The second slide should be completed in the next few months. The total cost of the slide portion of Juan Tabo Hills Park was $570,000 from city and state funding.
