RIVERSIDE — The Hillcrest girls flag football team had no trouble moving the ball during the first half of Tuesday night’s game. Finishing was the problem, as the Trojans had no points to show for their efforts at the break. Hillcrest flipped the script in the second half, however. Twin sisters Nayomi and Yazmyn Pryor combined to score three touchdowns, as the Trojans rallied for a 18-13 victory over visiting North to clinch at least a share of the Ivy League championship. “We weren’t missing by much the first half,” Hillcrest coach Marcus Pallares said. “All we needed to do was clean some things up.” Hillcrest’s three drives in the opening half ended with turnovers — the first and third on downs and the other on an interception. The Trojans (15-2, 4-0 in league) only had three possessions in the second half, but each one ended with a trip to the end zone. “We had a long talk at halftime, and the coaches told us we need to lock in and play hard in the second half,” Nayomi Pryor said. North (6-8, 2-2) scored on its first drive in each half. Naomi Shannon connected with Angelina Martinez for a 1-yard touchdown in the opening half. The Huskies extended their advantage to 13-0 after Shannon found Sophia Gonzales for a 2-yard touchdown to open the second half. That’s when Hillcrest quarterback Alex Sanchez and the Pryor twins took over the game. Sanchez scrambled for a 29-yard gain, setting up a 3-yard touchdown pass from Yazmyn to Nayomi with 13 minutes left on the clock. Two plays later, Yazmyn Pryor intercepted a pass at midfield. Chantel Ruffin had a 21-yard run to help put the Trojans in scoring possession. Sanchez tossed a 12-yard touchdown to Yazmyn Pryor, but a failed conversion attempt left the Trojans trailing 13-12. North went three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and Hillcrest took over on its 20 with 1:37 on the clock and only one timeout. But the Trojans needed only one play and 12 seconds to strike, as Nayomi Pryor snared a pass from Sanchez and slipped away for a 60-yard touchdown. “It was time to fight,” Nayomi said. “I just said to myself that I was going to sprint my route. I caught the ball and just ran as fast as I could.” The quick strike put the Trojans ahead for the first time, but there was still work left to be done. “That was an amazing play by two great players. Just wish we could have run a little more time off the clock,” Pallares said with a laugh.
