RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Those who visit La Milpa know the heart of Mexico beats right in the middle of Richmond. Martin Gonzalez and Monica Chavez, the duo behind this family restaurant and traditional market, invite you to experience their passion for authentic Mexican culture through food and community. “We are far away from home but to feel home in the heart, it's really important," said Chavez, who joined Gonzalez as a business partner after first visiting the market as a customer when she moved to the United States. In doing so, he sought to reconnect with his roots and serve his community. “When you move to another place, you always carry with you the most important things you love from your childhood," Gonzalez said. According to Gonzalez, La Milpa is dedicated to fresh ingredients, sourcing food directly from Mexico for many years before starting its own chemical-free farm six years ago. La Milpa in Richmond. With the support of Virginia’s Employment Commission, La Milpa employs agricultural workers from Mexico, further enriching the cultural experience. “The restaurant, the market and now farming — it’s one thought about showing your culture,” Gonzalez said. From traditional cooking ingredients to popular Mexican Santo statues, the market offers everything you might find in a Latin American market. As a family-owned establishment, La Milpa embodies a core aspect of Latino culture—community and connection. “That’s the amazing part of La Milpa, because it’s not just a restaurant -- it’s a place you really can learn about Mexican culture, about Mexican food, about farming and Mexican art,” Gonzalez said.
