PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The war in the Middle East now pushing into a new phase with Iran firing hundreds of missiles into Israel Tuesday. The attack comes after the leader of Hezbollah was killed in a strike this weekend. Senator Jack Reed, the chairman of the U.S. Armed Services Committee said there are many challenges ahead. “Now, Israel I think feels, since their territory has been literally hit and they suffered some damage although its believed to be minimal, that they too have too respond and the question I think is, a response that is proportional and doesn’t generate an all out unconstrained exchange of weapons and attack by both sides,” said Reed. Republican state Rep. Michael Chippendale criticized President Joe Biden in an interview with ABC 6 News. “I think that the administration’s reaction is a little too late, a little to little and what happens from this point forward, I don’t know, I don’t know what Israel’s response will be,” said Chippendale. “But I hope it’s concise and decisive and I hope frankly, it’s enough to stop what’s going on because because we can’t really have any stability globally as long as there’s unrest in that part of the world.” Israel’s Iron Dome intercepted many of the missiles and the United States helped to intercept some of those missiles as well. “Essentially, we’re giving them vital information for their defense without which they couldn’t effectively target these missiles,” said Reed. Reed said with this dramatic attack on our country’s ally, the U.S. simply can’t just sit by. “I think the best approach from the United States is the approach of sanctions both on individuals and also on institutions and again, I think that’s something that will probably be considered seriously,” explained Reed.
