OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Iran launched 200 missiles at Israel Tuesday in retaliation for airstrikes and other targeted strikes in September killing Hezbollah leaders. Iran's attacks come on the eve of Rosh Hashana, also known as the Jewish New Year. The attacks also came just after the conclusion of a ceremony in Overland Park at the Jewish Community Center to open an exhibit marking one year since the Hamas surprise terror attack on Israel. During Tuesday's event, people signed slips saying where they were when they learned of what had happened last October 7 in Israel. 1,200 stones with names sit at the center of an exhibit titled "A Year Without." Independence Police Department opens new substation inside Independence Center "It's a year without end, it's a year without the time to process. It's a year without normalcy, we hear so many different responses to what this year has been like," Neta Meltzer, interim executive director, Jewish Community Relations Bureau, said. Some of the 1,200 were killed by rocket attacks, others were at the Nova music festival near Gaza where hundreds were taken hostage. About 100 remain held hostage or unaccounted for. "People in this community were directly impacted by it. We have community members that were there that day. We have community members with family there with friends there," Meltzer said. One of those was Micah Levine's cousin Joel Gutovitz, a former resident at the UMKC School of Medicine, who was celebrating a Jewish holiday when he went to work trying to save victims. "They had people coming in riddled with bullets needing to save their life," Levine said. While the conflict with Hamas continues and plenty of retaliatory strikes of their own, Israel is also fighting with Hezbollah backed by Iran and now possibly Iran itself. President Joe Biden said Tuesday the U.S. Military is supporting the defense of Israel at his direction and Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran made a mistake launching the ballistic missiles and "will pay for it." Not just for the Jewish people, but any people that are maligned, any people that are being persecuted," Levine said. An October 7 remembrance ceremony is planned a the B'nai Jehudah Temple in Overland Park on Monday October 7 at 5:30 p.m.
