They took us and they took my family, and they fed us, they housed us," stated Odin, a father of two young daughters who was referred to the program. New facility to provide shelter, care for Oahu’s medically vulnerable homeless The Homeless Outreach & Navigation for Unsheltered Persons program relocated to a lot between Kama'aha Avenue and Alohikea Street. Previously, the shelters were at the Blaisdell Park in Aiea. The program provides meals, shower areas, 24/7 police patrols and social services. "The homeless can have shelter, they can have food and they can navigate the system easier and have still have a place where they feel safe," said Sam Moku, City & County Homeless Coordinator. According to the City, the program has helped 365 houseless individuals sheltered in Aiea since April. Of those numbers, 24 went into transitional housing and 17 moved on to permanent housing. "Most likely I'll move with them until everything on my end is worked out," said Odin. "The fact that they'll even allow us to move, I also think is a great part of the program." The Makakilo, Kapolei and Honokai Neighborhood Board Chair, Anthony Makana Paris, stated the board reached out to the City when community members voiced their concerns regarding the homeless in the area. "We reached out to the mayor's office to ask them and our other [elected officials] if they would provide additional support services for our community to help our unsheltered neighbors get a hand up," said Paris. "It's going to get them off of the streets."
