Local shipping officials said the dockworker's strike on the East and Gulf coasts shouldn't have a direct impact on the state. In a statement, a spokesperson for Matson said "We don't expect any significant impact on our West Coast services to Hawaii." $35M Waikiki Natatorium restoration project moves forward A spokesperson for Pasha Hawaii said "We are not experiencing any impacts to our vessel services and expect on-time sailings" from California to Hawaii. The indirect problem, according to the Hawaii Shippers Council president, is port congestion. With all the port closures, companies may be forced to ship everything to the west coast causing traffic and possible delays. "For every day the strike continues, it will result in at least a week's worth of logistics congestion," said Michael Hansen, Hawaii Shippers Council president. Hawaii's two shipping companies, Matson and Pasha, have their own, dedicated ports on the West Coast. "I don't see that as a real problem in the future unless this thing drags off for a very long time," said Hansen. Any delay means supply issues. Supply issues mean rising prices. "From what I've heard from the various economists who have been discussing the strike today, they're saying this could have an inflationary impact on the economy, which would mean rising prices," said Hansen. How long is long? Hansen said there was one dockworker strike in the late 1940s that lasted 100 days. "The people of my parents' generation remembered that strike very well because that really impacted the islands, but I wouldn't expect anything like that to take place in the current terms," said Hansen. "That will all depend upon how long the guys on the East and Gulf coast stay out on strike," he said.
