FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Fort Wayne City Council gave a do-pass recommendation for the Brentwood S. Tolan House as a Designated Local Historic District. The property is located at 316 W. DeWald St. in the Hoagland Masterson neighborhood. The Tolan House is significant to local history, Brentwood S. Tolan was the master designer of the Allen County Courthouse, a National Historic Landmark. The Tolan House is an example of the Queen Anne style, built around 1887 Tolan himself likely designed the house. Homeowners Leopoldo Garcia Mota and his wife Luz have lived at the Tolan house for 12 years. "We didn't know we were buying a piece of history," said Mota. The Mota's said they wanted to preserve the Tolan House and ensure nothing happened to it with all the changes happening in the area. Creager Smith, the City of Fort Wayne's Historic Preservation Planner believes the residents around the property are why it will be preserved. "A lot of attention given to how walkable that area is and it's exciting that they have decided they would like to protect the house," said Smith. The details of the house are unique to the late 1880s when it was built. A few of the features include dual gables in the front of the house, a wraparound front porch, and stained glass windows. "It adds character to the neighborhood, it adds wellness and value to the homes," said Scott Meyers, 4th District, Fort Wayne City Council. Tolan also was the architect for the Whitley County Courthouse in Columbia City. Fort Wayne City Council is expected to pass this at the next meeting.
