EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- Here are what political leaders in Texas and New Mexico are saying about the vice presidential debate on Tuesday, Oct. 1 between Republican nominee J.D. Vance and Democrat Tim Walz. We took a sampling of reaction from both sides of the aisle. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Republican, on X "@JDVance is the CLEAR winner of tonight’s debate. Kamala Harris picked the most liberal running mate she could in Tim Walz. It’s the most dangerous ticket in our nation’s history. If you think 4 years of Harris-Biden was bad, that's nothing compared to 4 years of Harris-Walz." NM Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Democrat, on X "The stakes after tonight’s debate couldn’t be more clear: Trump and Vance want to rip away health care protections for all Americans including women’s bodily autonomy. Harris and Walz want to lift up all of us, strengthen health care access and move our country forward." Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa “Tonight, Governor Tim Walz laid out his and Vice President Kamala Harris’ clear vision for our country’s future — one that protects our freedoms, strengthens democracy, and ensures that everyone has the opportunity to succeed. “In stark contrast, J.D. Vance defended Trump’s Project 2025 agenda, which would totally reshape the federal government by attacking our democratic institutions, cutting vital programs Texans rely on, and restricting freedom, including reproductive rights and healthcare access. “This November the stakes couldn’t be higher, and Texans have a clear choice to make. Vice President Harris, Governor Walz and Congressman Colin Allred are committed to building upon America’s promise. Texans will stand strong behind Walz, Harris, and Allred to create a brighter future for all.” Amy Barela, first vice chairwoman of Republican Party of New Mexico "In tonight's Vice Presidential debate, Senator Vance demonstrated true leadership by presenting factual, clear statements and outlining a comprehensive plan for moving our country forward. His focus on policy, solutions, and the future provided a stark contrast to Governor Walz, who opened the debate by shifting blame to the past rather than addressing the pressing issues facing the nation today. "The reality is that the current administration has had ample opportunity to address these problems but has failed in every key area, from the economy to national security. Instead of taking responsibility or offering concrete solutions, Governor Walz doubled down on the same failed policies that have plagued Minnesota. Bringing those policies to the national stage would only further exacerbate the challenges our country faces. "Senator Vance has made it clear that he is ready to lead with strength, vision, and a plan for real solutions — something this country desperately needs. For too long, far-left Democrats like Tim Walz, Martin Heinrich, and Gabe Vasquez have prioritized their out-of-touch political agendas and wallets over the best interest of our state. If New Mexicans want to see their economy thrive, the border secured, and their streets safe, the only choice is Trump/Vance and Republicans down the ballot." NM Senate Republican leader Sen. Greg Baca, R-Belen “Tonight, Senator JD Vance was the clear victor in the debate versus Governor Tim Walz. Senator Vance layed out an eloquent and concise path to prosperity for our country.  "Keeping our families safe, growing our energy resources, and ensuring peace in the world is paramount. The path Senator Vance proposed of increased national security, economic opportunity, and stability for working-class Americans, as well as global peace through strength ought to resonate with New Mexican voters. We are all too familiar with the harsh realities of having an open southern border, harsh economic climate for working class New Mexicans, and violence throughout our communities. The choice is clear this November — President Donald J. Trump and Vice President JD Vance.” U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico "I guess JD Vance hasn’t heard of the Inflation Reduction Act. I’ll help him out: it was the largest investment in American clean energy manufacturing EVER and it was passed by Democrats during the Biden Harris administration." U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Democrat from New Mexico "Kamala Harris and Tim Walz will fight for the middle class. We believe in the middle class because that’s where we come from."
