FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Two businesses were evacuated and a firefighter was injured following a fire at a local market in Fresno, according to the Fresno Fire Department. Firefighters say around 12:40 p.m. they responded to a strip mall near Shaw and West avenues after receiving multiple calls of black smoke emitting from a building. Fire investigators determined the fire ignited from the vent of a bread oven in Papaya Fresh International Market and spread into the roofing material. Both the market and neighboring Dollar Tree were evacuated as crews say they used ladders to access the fire and extinguish the flames. The fire department reports one firefighter was transported to a local hospital for heat-related illness. Crews add the triple-digit weather and their protective gear combined can contribute to heat-related injuries. Firefighters have since extinguished the flames and the neighboring store has returned to normal operations. The Fresno County Department of Public Health has been contacted to investigate the international market. All in all, the department confirms only minimal damage has been sustained to the building, residing in just the vent and some roofing material.
