TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A baby girl has passed after a suspected DUI collision involving a big rig near Lake Kaweah Monday, CHP Visalia announced on Tuesday. CHP says around 1:30 p.m. they responded to Highway 198 at Horse Creek Road for a report of a two-vehicle collision. Investigators say they determined that 24-year-old Johnathon X. Reyes of Visalia was traveling westbound on Highway 198 east of Horse Creek Road in a Kia Optima just as a Freightliner truck was traveling in the opposite direction. In an attempt to pass a vehicle in front of him, officers say Reyes turned to the left, traveling directly in the big rig's path. Reyes abruptly turned right to avoid the truck but ultimately collided head-on. As a result, CHP reports a 1-month-old girl sustained fatal injuries; she was pronounced deceased after being transported to a local hospital. A four-year-old also sustained minor injuries while Reyes and his female front passenger sustained major injuries. The two occupants of the big rig reported complaints of pain and remained on scene, according to investigators. Officers reported everyone was wearing seatbelts or secured in child restraint seats, however, Reyes was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was placed under arrest. This is an ongoing investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
