SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego Gas & Electric customers could see a break on their bill this month. The utility company announced Tuesday each residential electric bill for the month of October will have a $78.22 credit on their statement. The discount is part of the benefits given to millions of ratepayers across the state as part of the California Public Utilities Commission's California Climate Credit program. The program is part of a wider initiative, the cap-and-trade program, aimed at reducing the state's emissions. Heat is back on for beginning of October Under the cap-and-trade program, investor-owned utility companies are allotted "emission allowances," or allotments of greenhouse gases they are allowed to emit. According to state officials, utilities are then allowed to sell those allowances if they take steps towards cutting their emissions, which then can be used to fund ratepayer credits or other clean energy projects. If a utility company uses their cap-and-trade funds for credits, they are typically distributed biannually — once in April and October. Earlier this year, SDG&E customers received a $58.98 credit on their natural gas statement and a $78.22 credit for electricity under the California Climate Credit program, according to the utility company. The upcoming $78.22 electric credit is the fourth largest among investor-owned utility companies across the state. County officials are looking to return $850k in cash: How to see if you’re owed According to the California Public Utilities Commission, Pacific Power customers will see the biggest discount in October with their $174.25 credit. Liberty Power and Southern California Edison customers will also see slightly larger discounts with $131.01 and $86 credits respectively. No action is required for SDG&E customers to receive the credit, the utility company says. The Climate Credit will simply be applied to ratepayers' October bill. As billing cycles vary for customers, SDG&E notes customers will likely see the credit show up at different times.
