Man in wheelchair killed while crossing I8

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A man in a wheelchair was killed while crossing a East County highway Sunday night and the driver is under investigation for allegedly driving under the influence, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP).
CHP reports a man in a wheelchair was attempting to cross Interstate 8 eastbound to the State Route 125 transition ramp at 9:50 p.m. Sunday when he was hit by a Mercedes going 45 mph on the transition ramp.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital where he later died. He has not yet been identified.
According to CHP, the driver of the car told police they were unable to avoid the pedestrian and stayed at the scene for treatment of minor injuries.

The investigation into the crash and whether alcohol and/or drugs were a factor remains ongoing. At this time, CHP says they suspect it may have been a factor for the driver of the Mercedes, while it remains under investigation if it was a factor for the victim.
