Willie Mae (Davis) Young had what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted — longevity and quality of life. Friends and family members remembered Young yesterday during a Going Home service inside Jerusalem Baptist Church. Young, who celebrated her 100th birthday in June, passed on September 23 following a lifetime of achievements. Young and John, her husband, founded Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Trenton, which first located on East State St. The church eventually relocated to 119 West Ingram Ave. as the New Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. While Willie Mae Young is survived by daughters Gwendolyn Brown of Trenton and Carolyn Merrill of Burlington Township, hundreds referenced her as “Mother Young”. An obituary noted Mrs. Young’s love of God, her family, and Mount Carmel. She prayed fervently and read the Scripture until her eyesight began to fail. Strength and kindness represented her key characteristics that attracted affection. Young enjoyed five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren. Interment occurred at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, send donations to New Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
