SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Postal workers in dozens of cities, including Springfield, held "Day of Action" rallies to draw attention to potential changes to the United State's Postal Service. The American Postal Workers Union Local 497 gathered in Springfield to address some of the issues that they are experiencing. According to the union, Postmaster General Louis Dejoy's plan is to slow down the mail even more while raising delivery costs. Ed Rowell, the President of Local 497 told 22News that the post office is for the community and these changes will inconvenience them tremendously. "Last election he tried getting rid of boxes, this time he is talking about changing three-day delivery for first-class mail to five-day delivery and that is concerning. We are a public service I understand we have a bottom line and have to make ends meet but ultimately, we are for the community out there," said Rowell. Diana Kirkland, who is a part of the APWU Local 497 said she is already noticing that the mail delivery process has been slowing down and these changes will impact many consumers. "We have people that get checks through the mail and we have people that get medications through the mail. There is so much sensitive communication that goes through the mail and this is going to turn everything around. This is exactly why I do not have my medications delivered because if this continues then we are going down a rabbit hole," said Kirkland. October 1st was the National Day of Action for postal workers across the globe.
