A bow hunter killed an elk at Park City Mountain in late September, state wildlife officials said, indicating on Tuesday that the investigation is continuing.A spokesperson for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Faith Heaton Jolley, said conservation officers on Sept. 26 were informed of an elk carcass at the resort. An officer from the division went to Park City Mountain the next day and found the carcass.Jolley said the elk’s head was removed by the time the officer arrived and “all the meat had been harvested and not left to waste.”She said the area of Park City Mountain is located within what is designated as a unit for extended archery elk hunting. The elk was killed within the dates of the extended archery season, she said.Park City Mountain, though, is private property, she noted. The resort in a prepared statement outlined a hunting ban on the terrain.“Park City Mountain operates on private property, and hunting is prohibited year-round at the resort. It is prohibited for the safety of our guests and employees and also aligns with Park City Municipal ordinances that apply across the property,” the statement said.Park City Mountain also said “prohibition notices are posted at major entries to the property including access points along Mid Mountain Trail, King Road, Willow Draw, Jupiter Peak and Pinecone Ridge.”An initial report to the Park City Police Department indicated the carcass was found along the route of the Silverlode Express lift, which is in the mid-mountain area of the resort. The Police Department occasionally receives reports of hunters on terrain at the mountain resorts or within the community’s open space. There has long been concern about the possibility of an accidental shooting involving a hunter and people recreating on the land.Jolley said the Division of Wildlife Resources recommends wearing orange or other colors that are fluorescent if mountain biking or hiking in locations where there are active hunts. The post Utah wildlife officials investigate bow-hunting killing of elk at Park City Mountain appeared first on Park Record.
