RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- After announcing in September that it might have to close its doors for good, the Virginia Repertory Theatre revealed on Tuesday that its fundraising goal of $600,000 has been met. According to the theatre, over 1300 donors came together along with additional support from local businesses and foundations to meet its fundraising goal of $600,000. Over 70% of the donors that contributed had not donated to the theatre before. A video will be released later in the day on Tuesday, Oct. 1 to thank the Richmond community and give some thoughts about the next steps for the company. This includes an announcement regarding an open forum at the Virginia Rep Center for Arts and Education (4204 Hermitage Rd) on Monday, October 7 at 6 p.m. with VA Rep leadership. "We don't take this gift lightly," said Managing Director Klaus Schuller. "Raising funds is hard work but now we have even harder work to do. We need to reimagine ourselves. We need to rebuild Virginia Rep from the ground up, instilling rigor, transparency and sustainability into everything we do." The theatre will continue its programming on Oct. 12 with the opening of "Grace for President" in the Jessie Bogese Theatre -- which will be a "pay-what-you-will" performance in conjunction with CultureWorks and their artoberVA series.
