NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Almost 47,000 dock workers across the United States are on strike including the Port of New Orleans. The International Longshoreman's Association Union members are saying they want a 77% wage over the next six years and a total ban on the automation of cranes and other equipment. The strike could cost about $7.5 billion a week leading to price increases and delays on everything from cars to fresh fruit and coffee. "If we don't have this thing resolved by year-end, it's going to really be a tragic situation honestly," said PJ's Coffee Chief Roast Master Felton Jones. (WGNO/Pat Thomas)(WGNO/Pat Thomas) President Joe Biden stated that he will not force the union members back to work even if the strike became a danger to the economy. On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Senator Bill Cassidy released a statement on the strike, criticizing the Biden administration for not preventing the event. "The longer this strike continues the more American families and workers will be hurt. It is imperative the White House use its authority to push for a quick resolution and avoid deepening this crisis." Port of New Orleans also released a statement that read: Port NOLA proactively worked with its customers and terminal operators by offering weekend gate operations this past weekend to shippers and trucking companies in an effort to minimize supply chain disruptions.
