CINCINNATI, Oh. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Hats, trading cards, beers, red roses, towels, messages and much more covers the late Pete Rose’s statue outside of Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati after the legendary Reds player’s passing on Monday. Fans of Reds Country stopped to say a few words and some couldn’t help but shed a tear as they remember the man they called “Charlie Hustle.” “He was an icon. He was Cincinnati,” said Michael Lamb, who was wearing a number 14 Reds jersey with Rose’s name on the back. “People resonate with the style of play of Pete,” said Greg Houston. “There’s something about a blue collar, hard working guy like Pete.” Rose’s identity as a Queen City native is what several fans say made him a player they just had to watch. Western Hills University High School or “West High,” is his alma mater. “He always talked about (being a local) everywhere,” said Kim Chaney. “You’re one of a kind Pete. Thank you for all you gave us!” Rose was a 17-time All-Star, all time Major League Baseball hit leader and three-time World Series champion among several other lofty accomplishments. His inspiration to fans has gone beyond the statistics and helped them live life with a higher purpose. “I’m 65-years-old. I played (baseball) all the way up until last year,” said Jeff Messacar. “I’m doing head first slides at the age of 60 because of him. People thought I was crazy, but there’s only one way to play and he knew how to play.” Categories: Featured, More Sports, Sports Tags: 4193, charlie hustle, Cincinnati, gabp, Hall of Fame, pete rose, Reds
